Hosting can vary dramatically in terms of speed, capabilities and so on.

Therefore, the following is a list of hosting companies/plans that we know work with WP Symposium (including photo upload), along with example client websites if provided.

Costs will depend on how popular your website is, but you can expect shared hosting to be cheapest, dedicated servers next and Cloud based hosting the most expensive (as a general rule).

Shared Hosting

You have a portion of a web server – the hardware is shared among many different websites. If any of those websites has a problem or causes performance issues for the server, your site will be also be effected. However, can be a very cheap way to host a website. The servers are also, usually fully managed. Not all shared hosting plans include a mySQL database, which you would need for WordPress.

Dedicated Servers

You get an entire server – performance is greatly improved, and the cost rises. You can usually choose an option whereby the hosting company manage the server – but this will cost more, and not all companies offer this.

Cloud Computing

Relatively new, cloud computing is true virtual hosting – not based on a single server, but spread over many and you get an “instance”. The benefit is that your instance can be scaled up and down, and adding (for example, a separate additional relational database server) takes minutes. However, costs can be high.
