Basically My idea is this,

A user nominates a gallery via checkbox - to display in "banner", WPS then takes a thumbnail of random images in said gallery, and displays them in block format, in a line (as facebook does) across the top of the profile page, styled nicely with some CSS. 

when no photos are in the gallery, or no gallery has been nominated, it will display either a thumbnail of a greyed out silouette or nothing.  

these should be placed JUST above the users display name, and the user should be able to chose which pages it should appear on. I.e, Only on activity. (preferably)

the user can click on each image, and will be taken directly to the photo from that gallery, allowing the user to continue browsing through the photos of the album.

And possibly, the photos in the banner could have a no. of  comments, on top of it, styled nicely...
