In the principle that would be possible, these menu items are hooked to 'symposium_profile_menu_filter' and their functions are simply generating the HTML code like this, for instance:

            $html .= __('My Events', 'wp-symposium');
            $html .= '</div>';

            $html .= '<div id="menu_events" class="symposium_profile_menu">';

If you're willing to do it by hand, search for the hook and modify those strings. Bear in mind you'd have to re-do it at each upgrade...

A more perennial way would be Simon adds either options or hooks for the titles themselves. @Simon  I'd gladly apply for the task, if you don't have the time...

You'll actually be able to do this from v12.09 RC3 (I'll upload later this evening). Here's the excerpt from the admin guide (also updated later on) to do what you want @gymlads:

symposium_profile_menu_end_filter
Where: At end of profile menu
Example: Rename All Activity menu text to News Feed

function my_own_function($html, $uid1, $uid2, $privacy, $is_friend, $extended, $share) {
    $html = str_replace('All Activity', 'News Feed', $html);
    return $html;
}
add_filter('symposium_profile_entire_menu_filter', 'my_own_function');

You would put the code above into your theme's functions.php file. You can change anything else in the profile menu if you want to.

I've tried adding;

Hi there - there should be an example in the admin guide Appendix. You say functions folder, you need to put it in your theme's functions.php file. Just making sure, I may have misunderstood you.

Yeah I followed the example, But nothing, I just get an error about a missing argument?
To clarify, I am putting it in my themes functions.php

Hmm... I've added a tutorial (see tutorials page). If you get an error paste it here and I'll work out what's going on (maybe tomorrow morning ... food delivery just arrived!!!). Sounds like you are editing the right file.

I've followed the simple tutorial to the letter, and it worked (done the correct function) However,

Whilst the text changes, I get an error message along with it,

As discussed with @AlphaGolf, the hook isn't sending all the parametors correctly so the function is giving the error displayed, I removed all of the args in the first line apart from $html and the error disapeared. 

I'm guessing you will need to poke around in the code so that all parametors are sent properly, or correct the tutorial?

Thanks @alphagolf, my bad.... The tutorial has been updated (and the admin guide). There was a crucial mistake.

add_filter('symposium_profile_entire_menu_filter', 'my_own_function');

should have been

add_filter('symposium_profile_entire_menu_filter', 'my_own_function', 10, 7); 

The last two parameters, for reference, are the priority (default is 10) and then the number of parameters being passed. 

That'll teach me for rushing a tutorial before the curry arrived. Ah, the admin guide was wrong before then wasn't it. Okay, +1 for wally award. Anyhow, check out the tutorial again, or the admin guide, they are now correct. Sorry....!

Importrant update regarding the above.

I've just noticed something really strange (perhaps only applys to my site, due to incorrect configuration, but seems okay?)

I currently have this in my functions.php

And the problem is, if the user is logged in, you can see the correct menu on your OWN profile, but if you view the profile of another member, it isn't displaying all of the custom changes, only some?

Is this something I've done wrong?

Of course, that was meant to be10,7, why did I suggest 10,1...? Sorry, my brain was completely out of order yesterday evening 

As for your last issue, you don't specify which strings are not replaced, however I would suggest the general rule to put "My Things" before "Things" if you need a special treatment for the first one : the replacements will be applied sequencially in the function, so if "Things" is replaced first, when comes the turn of "My Things" it will not be found...

For "(My) Blog Posts", it's likely that I'll propose this as an option to the plugin, probably more convenient for the end user, along with a few more things I have in mind. Watch this space, kindly offered by Simon, lol

In itself not a major change indeed, and I've already applied for the task, if you don't have the time before the plane, just update the RC, I'll gladly do it.

Next request will be "how can I organize these menu items one after the other"... I think I already read this here...

You mean horizontally? If so, the profile template tutorial does that (and a drop down)?
Otherwise CSS I guess. Off the top of my head!

And this has sorted all the issues.


I just have one more question, Is there any way to stop a menu item displaying on OTHERS profile, and only on my own.

for example, I think (for me) having "news feed" on my friends profiles, in addition to "my activity" is a bit overkill. If I could make "my activity" display ONLY and "news feed" only on the logged in users profile, would be great..

i'm assuming its a hook, but I don't know what because im a massive noob...

If I may, I would add a test to check if a given string is empty before attempting to display it. That would serve both as a protection and a functionality, ie if "My Things" is empty, don't display this item, if "Things" is not empty, display it on others' pages....

We think alike, I'm adding checkboxes to display on your own or others, and able to change text for both. Will try and get RC4 out tonight with it in

To me the checkboxes are not needed as those settings are redundant, an empty string in either "My Things" or "Things" meaning don't display on own page or others' pages...

I will mirror this with BlogPost, as soon as RC4 is uploaded I'll try it out.

I've gone with the checkboxes for two reasons. First was leaving empty to hide needed explanatory text when tried with my immediate testers (family, girlfriend, etc!) but the tick box was more obvious; and second (for the techies) it leaves the div in place in case it's needed via the filter in the future.
I've done the default items, will add Groups, Following (etc) for RC4.

I thought it would ease the integration of "external plugins" in the profile menu, but I'm just realizing that the hook will still exist anyway, so it's not a real issue.

You already have several options in WPS, which have the mention "leave blank for no-one", "0 to disable", "0 to ignore", so having one extra "leave empty to not display at own page" or "at others' page" wouldn't seem too surprising... And I don't see why an admin would need the div if he has decided not to display...  But of course if it's done...
