This is a good spot, the list is currently hard-coded and should be replaced with checkboxes for all roles, as it is with other areas of WPS admin. I've added to the voting page, and if a quick thing will get it asap (doubt it will be this weekend though).

I agree, it's not a big thing to change. I'll also split them out into 3 situations:

• view the entire forum (forum categories provides granular control)


• post new topics


• reply to existing topics (then you can have a forum where someone creates topics, and more users can reply)

Roles will still be used, but if you want to use capabilities, you can use a plugin like Capability Manager to create roles around your capabilities. 

Will be in next release candidate (6), will let folk know via Twitter feed (follow me), so follow if you don't already. Should be update Tuesday evening (UK time).

I understand better the point you raise over your two posts 

To confirm - WP Symposium as well as WP Symposium Blog Post both draw the list of roles from $wp_roles, and not from capabilities. Except for this particular list which is hardcoded, as Simon wrote already, the one that can be found in the two options "View forum level" and "Forum post level" that can be found in Symposium > Forum.

Bear in mind that you also have Forum Categories behnid, so it gives an extra level of what can be seen by members with "exotic" roles...

It's a quicky indeed, however I really wonder how the interaction with Forum Categories should be managed. At any rate I second you in that it shall be addressed without delay, it's too... 1990's

I'm using Members by Justin Tadlock, it does create roles and WP Symposium works just fine at finding these new roles. Except for the two options "View forum level" and "Forum post level" that can be found in Symposium > Forum.

Where exactly can't you find extra roles ? Wouldn't it be a multi sites issue ?

The current drop down lists are hardcoded for WordPress default roles, legacy issue, so will never see any new roles.

From next release candidate, and therefore next release, the forum drop-down lists will be replaced by checkboxs for all WordPress roles, including those that you add.

The forum options will be split into three scenarios:

1. Roles that can view the entire forum (forum categories will provide granular control)


2. Roles that can create new topics


3. Roles that can reply to existing topics

I was insisting on questionning @Ellsweb because he also posted in the Members plugin category, which made me think there could be a more general issue. So the conclusion is that this issue is strictly what has been discussed in this topic...

Ok, is fixed locally, will be in for next RC (and next live). Error only relevant to release candidate, not previous live release.
